Earthquake Insurance
Lessons learned from the aftermath of tragedies have revealed, again and again, that you can manage risk and recover faster after a disaster if you have insurance. Standard homeowners’ insurance does not cover damage from land movement or landslides. Most homes will experience damage that does not surpass their insurance deductibles if an earthquake occurs. Even with high rates, insured homeowners would not receive money from their policy to address the damage. However, earthquake insurance policies feature a high deductible, which makes this type of insurance worthwhile if the entire home is destroyed but not applicable if the home is merely damaged. Rates depend on location and the probability of an earthquake losing power. Rates may be lower for homes made of wood, which withstand earthquakes better than homes made of brick.
Our earthquake insurance has three basic coverages, which include your dwelling coverage. This is sometimes referred to as Coverage A and covers your home up to a certain amount, called the limit. It also includes your property coverage, sometimes called Coverage C, and covers things in your home, like furniture, TVs, and computers. Additionally, it covers your living expenses (ALE) or loss of use, sometimes referred to as Coverage D, and covers temporary and extra costs to live elsewhere. At the same time, your area is evacuated, or your home is repaired.
